How do we address the question of what does integrated accessibility look like for making music or sound performances?
What are the desires and needs, the challenges, and ultimately the solutions?
This is the point where I am beginning from now. To find my way in a creative practice, and discover solutions that connect me to exploring and developing a strong creative output with the help of technology, and finding ways for that to integrate and connect culturally with other creatives and audience.
So where does this begin? The first stage was to discover that this is something I wanted to, and could do. For years immediately after my accident I only worked as a composer and sound designer/artist creative practice. Limited to constructing soundscapes or compositions from my computer, and never performing live.
Eventually I did start to experiment with my voice first all, and as I previously eluded to, I then made an effort to try to return to playing the instrument I had mostly pursued, the saxophone. This was what I most wanted to do, and had a desire and ideas formed around how this would work. As I pursued those desires and ideas it became more and more frustrating as I slowly realised I could not meet them. I could not get to a level that was satisfying, and my experience was tainted by my previous experience performing on the saxophone.
I have since experimented with what I havealso shown in the history posts, the laptop and the guitar. Along with still using my voice, and some small amounts of hand percussion or found objects at times.
The point here is that I desired to return to an instrument and a way of playing that instrument that I was unable to meet. This in turn led to disappointment, and frustration. But ultimately the realisation that to perform, or should I say, to find the means to perform, be creative and connect with others are what is important. This is where the measurement or the balance between a want or desire, and meeting the need of what is actually required to be for me to be successful in the creative practice, can be different things. Or maybe not different things, but different solutions to the same fundamental need
